Present indicators to carry out surgery for obesity are the following:
Patients with a Body Mass Index higher than 40 if they comply with the following criteria:
Repeated failure in controlled medical and dietary treatments.
Obese for more than 5 years.
Between 18 and 55 years old (though good results have been published with selected patients older than 55).
No contra-indication regarding anaesthesia.
No contra-indication due to either psychological problems or drug addiction.
Obesity is not caused by an endocrinal pathology.
Patients with a Body Mass Index between 35 and 40 but suffering from serious diseases related to overweight.
